II did it: I went to the lavender fields in Valensole. I originally wanted to showcase life here beyond the lavender clichés, but my curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to see what was happening on this plateau, so popular with tourists and influencers. And what can I say? Yes, there are quite a few people around. Taxis and minibuses bring people here for 30 minutes so they can take their photos.
I remember the lavender fields from my childhood, when they weren't so touristy. It's a bit strange to see it like this now. But even I couldn't resist the charm of this purple sea of blooms. It really does have something magical about it, and you can understand why tourists are drawn to it. Ultimately, everyone has to decide for themselves whether they want to partake in this or not.
If you want to see the lavender fields, you should come here from mid-June to mid-July. That's when most of the fields are harvested to produce lavender oil and other lavender products. There are also other places where you can see lavender fields. For example, in the area around Sault, where the fields bloom until the end of July. You can find cultivation sites, blooming times, and many other useful information summarized here: Lavenderfields in Provence.
Conclusion
It's hard to resist the charm of the Provençal lavender fields, even if you generally disagree with mass tourism. Whether you want to experience this unique atmosphere is up to each individual – but it's understandable if you decide to do so. 😊
