A few days ago, I finally decided to take a little drive to see the famous mimosa bloom at some of the best spots. While these bright yellow trees, which bloom from January to March, can be found almost everywhere in the region, they are particularly abundant in the Var département – especially along the so-called Mimosa Route, which stretches from the seaside town of Bormes-les-Mimosas to Grasse, further up in the mountains.

After doing some research and asking around at local tourist information centers, I decided to drive through the Tanneron Massif to the charming village of the same name, high up in the hills, and go on a short hike. I wanted to fully immerse myself in this sea of blossoms – and I wasn’t disappointed!

A Sea of Yellow – Despite Challenging Conditions

Although this year’s bloom was heavily impacted by unfavorable weather conditions last fall – reportedly, 80% of the harvest failed – the sight was still absolutely magical. Mimosas don’t just grow wild here; they are also cultivated professionally, both for the perfume industry and as cut flowers.

There are several hiking trails around this charming little village. The most well-known route takes about 1.5 hours and offers breathtaking panoramic views throughout. You’ll walk past both wild mimosa forests and cultivated plantations. Interestingly, eucalyptus is also grown here.

Better to Visit on a Weekday...

Of course, I wasn’t the only one there. There were quite a few tourists around, and the local restaurant was very busy. However, the crowds were manageable, and the atmosphere remained relaxed – though I should mention that I visited on a weekday.

Tips for Your Own Mimosa Tour

If you want to experience this spectacle for yourself, I highly recommend checking in with the tourist information centers along the Mimosa Route. There are plenty of other amazing spots to discover, and throughout the region, you’ll find mimosa festivals and flower parades during the blooming season.

For me, the drive was definitely worth it – and so was the huge, self-picked bouquet! 🌿💛 (Just a heads-up: Please only pick wild mimosas, not the ones in designated plantations!)
