This week marked my daughter's fourth birthday, prompting me to share a series of photos on Instagram. True to my practice, she remains unidentifiable in the pictures, captured only from behind, this time amidst the captivating landscapes of Southern France.
Upon reflection, I revisited the question of why I choose not to reveal her face on social media. Recognizing the diversity of opinions on this matter, I refrain from passing judgment on those with differing approaches. To me, maintaining her anonymity while integrating her into my Instagram narrative feels like a sensible compromise.
However, a glimpse into the social media activities of my teenage stepchildren and their friends has given me pause. Platforms like TikTok are inundated with videos solely fixated on physical appearance, with girls often striking alluring poses. A decade or two ago, such content would have been deemed inappropriate, yet today's youth view it as the norm, influenced by a generation that considers these expressions commonplace. Some have even achieved a breakthrough, accumulating an impressive number of views and likes. Delving into the specifics of their audience is a contemplation I'd rather avoid.
I am reasonably certain that the majority of this generation would perceive it as perfectly normal to have featured on their parents' social media from a young age. In the inverse scenario, one can imagine them questioning why they were not showcased, perhaps even expressing reservations. Could it then be considered a strategic move to present them, allowing room for critique and fostering a reflective examination of their own actions?
It's a contemplation I'm laying out for consideration. Despite this, I remain committed to maintaining my child's anonymity. Nevertheless, it underscores the considerable gap in our understanding of social media compared to the younger generation, and it suggests that we may not have yet discovered the optimal answers and strategies for positive engagement. Therefore, there is value in staying informed, questioning our own behavior, and remaining vigilant.
